Phinisi trips in Komodo sail within a national park founded in 1980, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991, covering 1,733 square kilometres and reporting 334,206 visitors in 2024. Liveaboard tourism centres on Labuan Bajo, served by Komodo Airport (LBJ). Entry charges are set on the park's official tariff page, so start there, before any operator's quote.
What are the basic facts about the park?
| Measure | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Man and Biosphere reserve | January 1977 | Wikipedia |
| Founded as a national park | 1980 | Wikipedia |
| UNESCO World Heritage Site | 1991 | Wikipedia |
| Total area | 1,733 square kilometres, of which 603 are land | Wikipedia |
| Visitors in 2024 | 334,206: 226,948 foreign and 107,258 domestic | detik.com, citing the park office |
Two things follow from those figures. Only 603 of the 1,733 square kilometres are land, so most of the park is water, and that helps explain why a boat suits it so well. Roughly two in three reported visitors in 2024 were foreign, a share we worked out ourselves from the detik.com numbers. Those numbers come through a news report of an official's statement, which is a little weaker than a published park table.
Is the World Heritage listing the same as the pinisi's UNESCO listing?
No, and marketing copy often blurs the two. Komodo National Park is on the World Heritage List. The pinisi appears on a different list altogether: UNESCO inscribed the art of boatbuilding in South Sulawesi on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017. The first honours a place, and the second honours a living craft.
A trip on a phinisi inside the park touches both, but neither gives any status to a particular boat or company. Our page on the 2017 UNESCO inscription explains what it covers. If a brochure says a vessel is "UNESCO listed", ask what exactly it means.
Is every phinisi in Komodo a true pinisi?
Not necessarily. Wikipedia defines the pinisi as a rig , and notes that charter and dive boats are now sold under the word too. A boat in Labuan Bajo may be a motor vessel in a traditional style, carrying little or no working sail.
That is no defect if comfort and access are what you want. It matters if sailing is the reason you came, so ask how many sails the boat has, whether they are ever set on your route, and how much of each passage runs under engine. Our page on the pinisi rig and its sails will help you recognise what you are looking at.
How do you reach the boat?
Komodo Airport (LBJ) at Labuan Bajo has a runway extended to 2,250 by 45 metres, long enough for A320 and 737-class jets, according to Wikipedia. Use a live schedule for flight times and routes. The same entry records a closure from 9 to 19 November 2024 because of the Mount Lewotobi eruption.
That closure is the most useful line in this section. A liveaboard leaves at a set time, and a one-day delay in the air can mean a missed embarkation. Plan a buffer before the sailing date, and get the operator's policy on late arrival, missed departure and refunds in writing before you pay.
What share of tourist movements use boat stays?
According to a statement from BPOLBF, more than 80 percent of tourist movements there use liveaboards and boat stays over hotels. The basis of that figure was not explained, so take it as a statement of direction. Separately, the Manggarai Barat tourism office, via Antara, reported 58,926 visitors to Labuan Bajo for January to April 2025. Those two figures and the park's own count rest on different bases, so do not add or divide them.
For you, the point is that in this destination the boat often replaces the hotel, and you should choose it with the same care. We have no reliable count of how many phinisi operate from Labuan Bajo, so treat any fleet-size claim with caution.
What do the entry fees cost, and where is the official table?
The authority is the Balai Taman Nasional Komodo, whose tariff and carrying-capacity page publishes the table in a form you need to open and read for yourself. Per-person figures also circulate on third-party guides, and their weekend and holiday numbers disagree with one another, so we reproduce none of them. Rely on the official page, and recheck close to travel.
Then ask your operator what its quote covers: who pays which charge, when, and against which receipt. Raja Ampat works differently, with a permit explained on our page about phinisi trips in Raja Ampat, so do not carry assumptions from one park to the other.
When is the right time to sail?
Komodo's month-by-month sailing season is something we cannot yet back with a citable record, so we give no months here. Operators will tell you when they prefer to run. Ask yours for something firmer: how many departures in your chosen month were changed or cancelled last year, which anchorages get dropped first in rough water, and who decides. An answer with specifics is worth more than any general calendar.
What should you ask before booking?
How trips are sold varies by operator, and we cannot confirm a standard package, so have these answered in writing:
- Is this a shared trip sold by the cabin, or do we take the whole boat? Our guide to chartering a phinisi explains the private route, and this liveaboard explainer the shared one.
- Which park charges are inside the price, and which are collected from us on the day?
- Who briefs guests on park rules, and is the park office's guidance the reference?
- How is waste handled on board? Indonesia's PM 29/2014, amended by PM 24/2022, covers pollution prevention for vessels operating in its waters.
- If weather or the authorities change the route, what do we get instead?
- Who is our contact ashore if the boat cannot be reached?
Hold us to the same list. A request through this desk can end in a contract with a company in our group, which gives us a stake in your decision, so compare what we send you with what others send. It will name the company and set out any fee and the payment terms.
What are the short answers on Komodo by phinisi?
Is Komodo National Park a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
Yes. Wikipedia records the listing from 1991, and the park was also a Man and Biosphere reserve from January 1977, before it was founded as a national park in 1980.
Does a phinisi trip include the park entry fee?
It varies by operator. Ask whether each park charge is inside the price or collected separately, and compare the answer with the official tariff page.
Can large jets reach Labuan Bajo?
Yes. The runway at Komodo Airport was extended to take A320 and 737-class aircraft. Routes change, so confirm your connection on a current schedule.
What share of Labuan Bajo's tourist movements use boat stays?
More than 80 percent, according to BPOLBF. Its statement did not explain how that was counted, so read it as a broad indication.
Can volcanic activity disrupt a Komodo trip?
Yes. Komodo Airport closed from 9 to 19 November 2024 because of the Mount Lewotobi eruption, so build spare days into your plan and check the refund terms.
