Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. Asking prices are not sale prices, and nothing here is legal advice.

A honeymoon on a phinisi yacht means days and nights aboard a wooden Indonesian vessel in waters such as Komodo or Raja Ampat, on a whole-boat charter or a shared trip. What separates one option from another is the cabin, the route and what the price includes. Few of those details are published across the fleet, so get each one in writing.

Should a couple charter the whole boat or join a shared trip?

Choose the whole boat if privacy is the point of the trip, because on a shared departure you divide the deck, the dining table and the schedule with strangers. A private charter lets you ask for a slower route, a late breakfast or a quiet anchorage, though the crew's judgement of weather and safety still comes first. We have no sourced description of what operators include in either format, so treat every inclusion as something to confirm.

A private charter does raise a sizing question. Lamima, the 65.2-metre vessel that is the most fully documented reference we have, offers 7 suites for 14 guests. Two people on a boat laid out for 14 means paying for empty cabins, unless the operator prices differently for smaller parties. Ask that question, and ask whether a smaller boat would serve you better. Our page on how chartering a phinisi works explains the general process.

What should you ask about the cabin?

Ask for the deck plan before you ask for anything else. Photographs show a cabin at its best angle, while a plan shows what sits on the other side of the wall. On a honeymoon, these are the questions that tend to matter:

What should you ask about the cabin?
Ask aboutThe precise question
BathroomIs it ensuite and private to this cabin, and is there hot fresh water at all hours?
Air conditioningDoes it run all night, or only while the generator is on?
NoiseHow far is the cabin from the engine room and generator?
WindowsDoes it have windows that look outward, and can they open?
BedIs it a fixed double, and what are its measurements?
PrivacyWhere do crew sleep and pass, and is any deck reserved for guests?
The named cabinWill the contract state this cabin, or could you be moved to another?

Our guide to phinisi cabin layouts and capacity shows how layouts relate to vessel size. Get the cabin name written into the offer, since a mid-trip move is the kind of surprise you do not want.

Will the boat actually sail?

Ask before you assume it will. A true pinisi carries its own two-masted rig, but the word now reaches many other wooden ships, and engines have been the working drive for decades. Lamima itself is described as a motor-sailer, with 1,277 square metres of sail.

So ask how many hours under sail the crew expects on your route, whether the rig is in working order, and how often the sails were set on recent trips. If the answer is that the sails are mostly for photographs, you can still have a wonderful trip, and you will know what you are paying for.

Komodo or Raja Ampat: which suits a honeymoon?

Pick by what you need to be sure of. If you want a documented airport, a national park and an official tariff page, Komodo gives you more to check in advance, though you should expect company at popular stops. If a single international permit valid for 12 months suits you, and you are content to rely on the operator for the rest, look at Raja Ampat. The table sets out what we can cite for each, as published, Oct 2026.

If you are imagining empty bays, read those figures first. You are unlikely to have every popular stop to yourselves, so ask the crew how they time their visits to busy sites, and whether they know quieter moorings. Our page on phinisi boats in Komodo has more on the park, and our Raja Ampat page covers the permit.

On timing, we cannot give you a sourced sailing calendar for either region, and we would rather leave the months out than guess at your wedding date. Ask each operator for its route plan for your exact dates, the conditions it expects, and what it does if those conditions turn.

What might a day on board look like?

There is no standard day to describe. Ask the operator to write out one sample day for your route, hour by hour, and check it against what the two of you want. Things worth raising:

  • When the boat moves, and whether long passages fall at night or by day
  • Whether snorkelling gear and a guide are provided, and for whom
  • Whether you can skip a group stop and stay aboard undisturbed
  • Whether a private dinner on deck or ashore is possible, and where permitted
  • Generator hours, and how quiet the boat is after dark
  • How dietary needs and a celebration dinner are handled by the galley

A day that reads as a dash between sites may suit active couples and disappoint those who came to do very little. The written sample shows you which trip you are buying, and it gives you something to hold the operator to.

How should a couple budget for the trip?

Multiply nights by the rate for your vessel, then add everything outside that rate: park tickets and permits, flights, airport transfers, drinks, gratuities and any crew extras. Price more than one version, because a shorter route or a smaller boat changes several lines at once.

The one published nightly rate we can cite is for Lamima, from a broker listing shown in the price table on this page. That figure belongs to a yacht with 7 suites, so it is no guide to a boat sized for two. Smaller boats need written offers.

Leave slack in the plan as well, since flights into Labuan Bajo have been disrupted before. Arriving a night early costs little against a missed departure, and travel insurance terms and the operator's cancellation terms should both be read with an event like that in mind.

What should you get in writing before paying?

Get a single offer that names the vessel, dates, cabin, route plan, inclusions and exclusions, who pays park charges, and what happens if weather, an eruption or a mechanical fault changes the trip. Add the refund terms for each of those cases.

An enquiry through the desk can end in a contract with a company in our group, so compare what we send you against this page as strictly as you would a stranger's offer. Look in it for the company's name, any fee and the payment terms.

What are the short answers for couples?

Can two people charter a whole phinisi?

Yes, if the operator agrees and you accept the terms, though a boat built for many guests may be priced for the whole vessel. Ask whether the rate changes for two, and compare it with a smaller boat.

Which month is best for a phinisi honeymoon?

No month is safe to name without the route. Ask each operator for its route plan and expected conditions on your exact dates, and get them in writing with the cancellation terms.

Are park fees included in a charter price?

It depends on the offer, so do not assume they are. Ask who pays Komodo tickets or the Raja Ampat permit, and have the answer written down along with any other charges collected on board.

Is a phinisi honeymoon crowded?

It can be on a popular route, so ask how the crew times busy stops. A private charter gives you the boat, not the bay.

How big is the largest honeymoon option?

The largest we can document is Lamima, at 65.2 metres with 7 suites for 14 guests. Treat it as a reference point rather than a typical choice.
